Thompson pleads guilty

Commissioners interview Pct. 3 constable candidates

By April Barbe

Former Cherokee County Pct.3 constable Randy Thompson reversed his plea from not guilty to guilty Monday on charges of possession and distribution of a “List I Chemical,” according to U.S. Assistant Attorney Richard Moore.

“We informed him (Thompson) of rights, established his mental capacity and a factual basis for the case was established,” Moore said. “A pre-sentencing report will be ordered, and the paperwork will be done by the probation office.”

According to Moore, Thompson should be sentenced four to six weeks from Monday’s court proceedings.

If convicted, Thompson could face up to 20 years in prison and/or up to a $250,000 fine. He would also be subjected to a supervisory term of not more than three years.

Thompson was arrested in early January by FBI officials and charged with possession/distribution of approximately 108 grams of pseudo-ephedrine, a component of methamphetamine.

Cherokee County Commissioners Court also met Monday to interview five applicants for Thompson’s position, according to County Judge Chris Davis.

“We have some good applicants, so it’s going to be tough to make a decision,” Davis said. “They are all from around the area.”

Davis said the commissioners court will meet again at 10 a.m. Monday, March 13 to attempt to narrow the list of applicants.
