Venegas wins Jacksonville 5K

Jacksonville Progress

From staff reports

The Jacksonville 5K Cross Country Run/Walk brought runners from across Texas to the Jacksonville High School cross country course on Saturday morning.

More than 80 runners participated in the 3-mile run sponsored by the Trinity Mother Frances Healthcare System, and Lufkin’s Ray Venegas led the way with a first-place time of 16 minutes, 10 seconds.

Venegas, a 2007 Lufkin High School graduate, is making his way back from a knee injury that sidelined him from the outdoor track season at Sam Houston State University.

“I’m satisfied with how I ran,” Venegas said. “I’m just trying to get back in shape.”

Jennifer Menard was the first woman finisher with a time of 19:11.

Another finisher of note was 9-year-old Cade Smith of Chandler, who won his age group with a 25:48. John Ross, 60, of Fort Worth won his age group with a time of 22:15.

“This is a good course,”said the five-time Boston marathoner who grew up in the area. “It’s hillier than it looks.”

The second annual event is a fund-raiser for Jacksonville Independent School District Health Services. Last year’s funds were used to buy two Accu Step walking programs with curriculum and pedometers for the PE students at Jacksonville Middle School.
