Kendall D. Lucas, 19, of Jacksonville, was arrested Nov. 5 for evading arrest, burglary of a habitation, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a dangerous drug.
Jerrie L. Mines, 20, of Alto, was also arrested at the same time on the same drug charges and for hindering in the apprehension of a known felon. According to the CCSD report, Mines is Lucas’ girlfriend.
Lucas, who has an outstanding warrant for the burglary of a habitation, was spotted Oct. 23, driving his car down S. Jackson Street in Jacksonville.
Sgt. Jamie Beene, of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department, recognizing Lucas, pulled in behind him and initiated his lights and siren, but Lucas refused to stop.
After turning down several roads, Lucas stopped the car in front of 704 Tyler St., and fled on foot between the residences 702 and 704 Tyler St. Beene exited his patrol car and chased Lucas on foot, but lost sight of him and returned to his car.
After returning to CCSD, Beene used jail records to identify the suspect as Lucas. Reviewing the patrol car’s video tape showed that another man exited Lucas’ car after Beene ran after Lucas. Lucas’ car was impounded.
On Oct. 26, Justice of the Peace Brenda Dominy issued a warrant for Lucas’ arrest for evading detention.
During the investigation to locate Lucas, officers interviewed Mines to ascertain his whereabouts. Mines claimed that they had broken up and did not know where Lucas was.
At 8:30 a.m., Nov. 5, acting on an anonymous tip that Lucas was staying at the Trade Winds motel in Jacksonville, four CCSD officers went to the motel room to arrest Lucas. The hotel clerk told the deputies that she had seen a black male and a white female entering Room No. 25.
The officers knocked on the door, but although they saw the curtain move, Lucas refused to open the door.
Upon entering the room, authorities found both Lucas and Mines hiding in the room’s bathroom. The CCSD report claims that Lucas resisted arrest and had to have his feet restrained. In the bathroom, officers found crack cocaine, six Xanax tablets and three Seroquel pills. Neither of the suspects have prescriptions for the pills.
Bonds totaling $28,000 have been set for Mines. Lucas is being held in custody on the burglary charge, and bonds totaling $11,500 have been set for him.
Several calls were made to the CCSD regarding this case, but none were returned by press time.
