Gene E. ‘Eddie’ Bates wins TPCA’s highest honor

JACKSONVILLE —  Long time petroleum marketer Gene E. “Eddie” Bates, of Beaumont, was presented with the 2010 E.K. Bennett Award by the Texas Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association (TPCA) during the group’s annual convention in Grapevine on July 27, 2010.

He is the son of retired Jacksonville High School Coach Gene L. Bates and the late Benny Jo Bates of Jacksonville.

He is a 1972 graduate of Jacksonville High School.

Named for TPCA’s first president, this award is TPCA’s highest honor for a Texas petroleum marketer who has provided outstanding contributions to his community, distinguished leadership in the petroleum marketing industry and exemplary service to TPCA.

Mr. Bates has been very active with TPCA and served consecutive terms as District Director, Regional Director and Director-at-Large over the past 20 years.

Mr. Bates helps bridge several generations of our industry’s development.  Continuing to grow a company first started by his grandfather, Mr. Bates has pioneered the marketing of fuels to refineries, manufacturing plants and rail road companies in Texas.

Mr. Bates combines business acumen with an unyielding interest in ensuring his operations meet the highest standards for efficiency and performance.  His company’s transport trucks are readily identifiable and frequently seen serving customers seven days a week, twenty four hours a day regardless of conditions.

Mr. Bates focus and determination are also in evidence when a hurricane hits the Texas coast.  He has a strong commitment to ensuring fuel supplies for emergency management organizations and critical needs facilities in his part of the state.  Thanks to his personal efforts, 9 hospitals and 41 kidney dialysis centers never experienced one interruption in power service during Hurricanes Rita, Katrina, Gustav and Ike.

Mr. Bates is a graduate of Angelo State University where he played football.  Mr. Bates was a free agent place kicker and punter for the Green Bay Packers.

The Texas Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association (“TPCA”) is a non-profit corporation based in Austin, Texas.  TPCA functions as a trade association for businesses engaged in the distribution and retail sale of motor fuels.  TPCA is composed of approximately 200 independently-owned companies which supply over nine billion gallons of motor fuel annually throughout the state of Texas.
