I hope you’ve had a chance to look over our pages honoring the victims and survivors of breast cancer. Everyone here at the paper has been pleasantly surprised by the community’s response and participation. I am sure the Susan G. Komen Foundation also appreciates your donation, as half of the money raised by this project went to them. (The rest helps offset the cost of printing the pages.) This is a wonderful start and we will do it again next year. Hopefully it will grow each year.
We are still taking submissions for the Veteran’s Day Salute pages which will run on November 11. The last day to get your submission in is November 8. This project works a little differently. Because our local advertisers are supporting it, it is free to honor a veteran. So get those submissions in now and pay tribute to your loved ones on 11-11-11.
This is also your last reminder to participate in the community survey. I want your feedback on what you like, don’t like and what you want to see added or dropped in the JDP. The feedback from this survey will be factored into our 2012 action plan. The deadline to turn your survey in is end of day tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 31. You can email it, snail mail it, fax it, drop it off at the front desk or if it’s after hours, drop it in our deposit box on the front of the building. In November I will share the responses in this column.
We have also been pleasantly surprised to see that donations are already showing up in our Toys for Tots box in the lobby. We partnered with the Marine Corps League on this project. All of the toys donated here will stay in Cherokee County. So thank you to those who have already stepped up and given. We are optimistic we can make a good showing on this, our first year with the campaign. You have until Dec. 22 to participate.
And last but not least, I wanted to share with you that we have hired a new Ad Director here at the paper. His name is Deon Williams and he starts on Nov. 8. He comes to us from Texarkana where he has been working as a consultant in sales and marketing. But he also brings five years of sales experience at the Dallas Morning News. In fact, he has 15 years of sales and management experience overall. Once he gets here please take a moment to welcome him and his family to the area.
