The Jacksonville Bass Club held its monthly bass tournament on Lake Tyler last weekend.
Everyone reported that bass fishing was slow. Like Lake Jacksonville, Lake Tyler’s hydrilla problem has subsided. According to a representative of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, “It is all but gone.”
First place went to Robby Goodman with four bass totaling 9.26 pounds. Goodman said, “I caught one of my keepers right at daylight on a green frog.” Afterwards Goodman fished around boathouses in Lake Tyler East until noontime but only caught what he called six or eight throwbacks.
In the afternoon Goodman targeted deeper boathouses on old Lake Tyler. Goodman said, “I caught my three other keeper bass on a watermelon/red creature bait in about eight feet of water. I had to work the bait real slow to catch fish.”
Frank Lusk came in second place with three bass totaling 8.23 pounds. Lusk fished the backside of Langley Island and the islands near the concession area during the morning hours where he caught one keeper bass on a 1/8 oz. buzz bait.
Then he targeted the back of a creek near reeds in water ranging from 1 1?2 to 8 feet deep. Lusk caught his last two keeper bass running a Terminator Hybrid spinner bait through the reeds.
His fishing partner, Randy Dykes, reported that, “He missed several bass on that bait.”
Tommy Goodman placed third with one bass caught on a watermelon Fluke in shallow grass and two bass caught near the pump station on a Rapala DT16 crank bait. His last bass came off of a main lake point in 16 feet of water working a Shaky Head lure with a Zoom worm. His stringer weighed 7.95 pounds.
Jerry Beasley caught a 5.90 pound bass about daylight in shallow grass on a watermelon red Fluke on Lake Tyler East.
The Jacksonville Bass Club’s October tournament will be held on Lake Murvall on Oct. 13-14. This will be a “paper tournament.”
The hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Larry Callahan is the tournament director.
