Family thankful for help after home burns

JACKSONVILLE — I would like express my sincerest gratitude to the Jacksonville Community towards our family!

On December 17 our house burned down and we lost everything.  Just as soon as it happened we immediately started receiving phone calls to see how everyone could help.  I know we received help from the Angel Tree, East Side School and East Side PTO, Nicholls, Middle School and several other individuals.  Also, thank you to the mystery person who was at Wal Mart and paid for our items when he found out what my sister was buying!

We live in a great community that went above and beyond to make sure our children had a good Christmas!! And thanks to everyone they did! We will forever be GRATEFUL for what you did! Please forgive us if we did not mention each individual’s name as there were so many that helped out. Thank you!

  • Buoys at Lake Jacksonville alarming to area resident

Far back in a cove on Byrd Branch, unbeknown except to a few adjacent homeowners, are two (tax payer funded) buoys, barely visible, in
about three ft. of water, that say "NO BOATS"!

  • Saying goodbye to area couple

A long-time friend, Doug Young, is no longer among us. He and his wife, who preceded him, were known and respected in our neighborhood around the golf course; she for her early morning walks and love of dogs; Doug for being an avid golfer with a fine-tuned sense of humor.

  • Discarded and forgotten

Family reunions are a tradition worldwide, I suppose. I’ve read the Kennedy’s do them; I have enjoyed movies of poignant, funny, even deadly gatherings of clans both small and great.

  • Cheney reminds writer of Capt. Ahab

Like a lost spirit from wars past, Dick Cheney recently appeared on Fox News to promote his political lobbying group called “Alliance for a Strong America.”

  • Standing up for abused, neglected children

It's been sixteen years since I retired from the Air Force, but I still serve our country and my community today. I am proud to be a veteran, and I am proud to be a CASA - a court appointed special advocate.
