CHEROKEE COUNTY —
Child Protective Services investigated more than 160,000 allegations of child abuse or neglect in Texas last year. One-hundred and fifty-six children died at the hands of their parents or other care givers. Sixty-six thousand, three-hundred and ninety-eight were victims of abuse or neglect. More than 17,000 had to be removed from their homes for their own protection.
Cherokee County had a record number of 150 children in their care last year (DFPS Media Specialists).
Each April, CPS, local governments, community groups, service organizations and average citizens join hands to prevent, recognize and report child abuse. Please join us.
When parents get help, there's hope for kids. Educating parents about child abuse, helping to strengthen their parenting skills, sharing ideas and resources for families, all can break the cycle of abuse of children. See the website Helpandhope.org.
I encourage everyone who cares about children to watch for abuse, and when suspected, report it to 1-800-252-5400.
