Cheney reminds writer of Capt. Ahab

JACKSONVILLE — Like a lost spirit from wars past, Dick Cheney recently appeared on Fox News to promote his political lobbying group called “Alliance for a Strong America.”

Cheney extorted Americans to continue fighting the war that he and President George W. Bush began in 2003 over their moral certainty that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.  Cheney also spoke with the Wall Street Journal saying that, “It is time the President and his allies faced some hard truths.  America remains at war and withdrawing troops from the field of battle while our enemies stay in the fight does not end wars. The security of our friends around the world can only be guaranteed with a fundamental reversal of the policies of the past six years.”

Dick Cheney’s continuing extortion for us to continue chasing America’s presumed enemies reminds me of the vengeful Captain Ahab in Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick. Over several chapters the novel revels that Captain Ahab has a personal agenda in pursuing a white whale.  Ahab again and again exhorts the crew of the whaling ship Pequod not to give up as they pursue the whale across a vast ocean.

Ahab, as it turns out, has never forgiven the whale from an earlier encounter that left Ahab with deep emotional and physical scars.

As readers of the novel may recall, the pursuit costs the lives of all save one of the Pequod’s crew. At the end of the novel the reader must come to grips with the following question:  Was it possible that the unholy evil Ahab perceived in the white whale which led to the chase and the deaths of so many may have been caused by a spiteful and unforgiving spirit within Ahab

himself?

  • Buoys at Lake Jacksonville alarming to area resident

Far back in a cove on Byrd Branch, unbeknown except to a few adjacent homeowners, are two (tax payer funded) buoys, barely visible, in
about three ft. of water, that say "NO BOATS"!

  • Saying goodbye to area couple

A long-time friend, Doug Young, is no longer among us. He and his wife, who preceded him, were known and respected in our neighborhood around the golf course; she for her early morning walks and love of dogs; Doug for being an avid golfer with a fine-tuned sense of humor.

Family reunions are a tradition worldwide, I suppose. I’ve read the Kennedy’s do them; I have enjoyed movies of poignant, funny, even deadly gatherings of clans both small and great.
