Local veteran: ‘Is that what we fought for?’

JACKSONVILLE — The other night I was sitting at the house feeling alone and feeling down in the dumps. Wishing I was back in Vietnam, wishing I was anywhere but here in Cherokee County. So, I wrote me a song, and I’m going to sing it at this year’s reunion. I’ve never wrote a song before but with the help of God, this is what I wrote:

What We Fought For

We came home back in 1968

To the land that was free to love

and free to hate

You called us names you now regret

So you put on a baseball cap and call

yourself a Vietnam Vet

Is that what we fought for, in that

old Vietnam War

Is that what we fought for

Buy some patches and put them on

your vest

Buy some medals our of a magazine and put them on your chest

In this old world who do you trust

Seems like everybody wants to be like us

Is that what we fought for in that

old Vietnam War

Is that what we fought for

Has America become a patriotic country that ain’t patriotic at all

And what about the names on the wall

Things won’t ever be the same

I see your faces but I can’t remember

your name

Is that what we fought for in that

old Vietnam War

Is that what we fought for

This old land may be free to love

and free to hate

But America better turn around before

it’s too late

You got to turn hate into love

And watch the eagle fly with the dove

You better get down on your knees and pray

And than God for the USA

For that’s what we fought for.

  • Buoys at Lake Jacksonville alarming to area resident

Far back in a cove on Byrd Branch, unbeknown except to a few adjacent homeowners, are two (tax payer funded) buoys, barely visible, in
about three ft. of water, that say "NO BOATS"!

  • Saying goodbye to area couple

A long-time friend, Doug Young, is no longer among us. He and his wife, who preceded him, were known and respected in our neighborhood around the golf course; she for her early morning walks and love of dogs; Doug for being an avid golfer with a fine-tuned sense of humor.

  • BBB column lacked Jacksonville comparison

The Saturday, July 12, Progress had an informative article from the Better Business Bureau regarding the precautions that should be taken when renting property.  Some additional comments are in order.

  • Federal Act concerning border children signed into effect in 2008

The Daily Progress published an Associated Press report that said Governor Rick Perry’s allegation that the illegal flow of children into the United States from Central America is a direct result of President Obama’s bad public relations policies.

  • Discarded and forgotten

Family reunions are a tradition worldwide, I suppose. I’ve read the Kennedy’s do them; I have enjoyed movies of poignant, funny, even deadly gatherings of clans both small and great.

  • Cheney reminds writer of Capt. Ahab

Like a lost spirit from wars past, Dick Cheney recently appeared on Fox News to promote his political lobbying group called “Alliance for a Strong America.”

It's been sixteen years since I retired from the Air Force, but I still serve our country and my community today. I am proud to be a veteran, and I am proud to be a CASA - a court appointed special advocate.
