LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Americans came by differences honestly

JACKSONVILLE — With all the passionate rancor and bickering between politicians,  it's little wonder that the United States  with a population of 317 million people remains a united.  When deciding what policies are best  for  Americans, consider that 82 % of our nation's population live in urban centers or suburbia near the cities and have unique needs.  Twenty-four percent of our national population are under the age of 20 and they present their own set of needs.  Thirteen percent of Americans are over the age of 65 and they also deserve special attention.  Add to that mix our nation's racial, religious, cultural, and historical differences and it's surprising we don't argue with one another more  often than we do. Regional and business needs along with personal  economic differences compound the difficulties of governing our nation of 317 million individuals.  It is truly remarkable that the United States has stayed united this long, after all we are all the offspring of  revolutionists  and secessionists.  We stepped off the Mayflower on to the shores of the New World bickering with each other.   We Americans came by our differences and bickering honestly.  What has prevented our nation from fracturing and going the way of Europe  into unconsolidated sovereign states is our belief in the ballot box.  It's our belief in the right of allowing the majority to govern - that is until the next election.

  • Buoys at Lake Jacksonville alarming to area resident

Far back in a cove on Byrd Branch, unbeknown except to a few adjacent homeowners, are two (tax payer funded) buoys, barely visible, in
about three ft. of water, that say "NO BOATS"!

  • Saying goodbye to area couple

A long-time friend, Doug Young, is no longer among us. He and his wife, who preceded him, were known and respected in our neighborhood around the golf course; she for her early morning walks and love of dogs; Doug for being an avid golfer with a fine-tuned sense of humor.

  • Discarded and forgotten

Family reunions are a tradition worldwide, I suppose. I’ve read the Kennedy’s do them; I have enjoyed movies of poignant, funny, even deadly gatherings of clans both small and great.
