Melvin for mayor

JACKSONVILLE — Kenneth Melvin was mine and Gordon's good neighbor for years.  He was our good square dance caller when  we took lessons.  He's been a good City Councilman, the one who studies the agenda items ahead of time and comes to the meeting prepared to make a motion, for or against, according to what is best for the City.  A man who gets good things done.  A good man who is willing to dedicate himself to the betterment of our City as its Mayor.  Please vote for the best man for the job, Kenneth Melvin, for Mayor.  You will be glad you did.

Margie Benge,

Jacksonville

  • Buoys at Lake Jacksonville alarming to area resident

Far back in a cove on Byrd Branch, unbeknown except to a few adjacent homeowners, are two (tax payer funded) buoys, barely visible, in
about three ft. of water, that say "NO BOATS"!

  • Saying goodbye to area couple

A long-time friend, Doug Young, is no longer among us. He and his wife, who preceded him, were known and respected in our neighborhood around the golf course; she for her early morning walks and love of dogs; Doug for being an avid golfer with a fine-tuned sense of humor.

  • Discarded and forgotten

Family reunions are a tradition worldwide, I suppose. I’ve read the Kennedy’s do them; I have enjoyed movies of poignant, funny, even deadly gatherings of clans both small and great.

  • Cheney reminds writer of Capt. Ahab

Like a lost spirit from wars past, Dick Cheney recently appeared on Fox News to promote his political lobbying group called “Alliance for a Strong America.”

  • Standing up for abused, neglected children

It's been sixteen years since I retired from the Air Force, but I still serve our country and my community today. I am proud to be a veteran, and I am proud to be a CASA - a court appointed special advocate.
