Kudos to ‘Tomato Republic’ cast, crew

JACKSONVILLE — THE STARS AT NIGHT WERE BIG AND BRIGHT, DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS!  The stars were the brightest the week of April 7, 2014 at the Dallas International Film Festival.

The STARS that were the brightest were individuals from the City of Jacksonville!

First in the week was the world premiere of “Tomato Republic”, a documentary movie about the 2013 Mayoral election in Jacksonville, which won the Special Jurist Award while creating quite a positive buzz. This documentary was directed and produced by Jacksonville natives and JHS graduates: Jenna Jackson (formerly with CBS television and Emmy winner), Whitney Graham-Carter, Anthony Jackson, all assisted by Matt Wilkerson.   This story was told professionally and with loving care and is “A JOB WELL DONE.” Hopefully, “Tomato Republic” will soon be playing at a theatre near you.

Second, the Bright Star of Margo Martindale added luster to the festival and the night. The world premiere of “Heaven is for Real” was shown to an appreciative and full house audience. Margo, an Emmy Award winner, Tony Award Nominee, and currently starring in CBS’s “The Millers,” was outstanding.  She drew high praise for her role from the producers, fellow actors, the press, as well as, the Burpo family who wrote the book.

Are we proud of “Tomato Republic” and Margo Martindale? You bet we are! I know your readership shares that same pride even if local coverage was minimal and not front page. You cannot buy this type of favorable publicity.  Let’s all support the efforts of these talented individuals who entertain us: Jenna, Whitney, Anthony, Matt and Margo.  A STANDING OVATION TO ALL OF THEM!

Sissy and Jeff Austin, Jr.

  • Saying goodbye to area couple

A long-time friend, Doug Young, is no longer among us. He and his wife, who preceded him, were known and respected in our neighborhood around the golf course; she for her early morning walks and love of dogs; Doug for being an avid golfer with a fine-tuned sense of humor.

  • Discarded and forgotten

Family reunions are a tradition worldwide, I suppose. I’ve read the Kennedy’s do them; I have enjoyed movies of poignant, funny, even deadly gatherings of clans both small and great.
