Library Week activities
• Tuesday, April 15, the library will be hosting the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours beginning at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday is also National Library Workers Day. The library’s Board of Directors will be providing a meal for the staff that day. The Board members and city officials will be invited to join them to show their appreciation to the staff for their dedication to the library. Woodmen of the World will provide the food and Brent Stahelin will be manning the grills in the library parking lot with assistance from the Board of Directors.
• On Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. an “East Texas Authors’ Forum” will be held at the Norman Activity Center. Debra Smith, a Jacksonville author, will speak for about 30 minutes. She will be joined by other local authors that will have displays of their books for sale.
More than 26 East Texas authors have been identified and invited to participate. The authors that have agreed to appear so far are Patti Foster, Sonny Guess, Sam Hopkins, Gay Ingram, Ronnie Johnson, Sandy Jones, John McCloskey, Anne McCrady, Hugh Neeld, Smith Co. Sheriff J. B. Smith, Arlyn Vierkant and Debra White-Smith. Writers from the Inspirational Writers Alive! group will also attend.
The public is invited to attend to meet their favorite authors, purchase books and have them autographed. The event is free of charge.
ETMC Jewerly sale
ETMC-Jacksonville’s Auxiliary will sponsor a Wirewood jewelry sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 17 and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 18 in the grand lobby of the hospital. Items with precious jems, gold and silver wire will be featured. Jewelry can also be made while you wait. Cash, checks and credit cards will all be accepted.
Boaters Safety course
Cherokee County Farm Bureau will sponsor a Boaters Safety course. People born after Sept. 1, 1984 and under 18 years old, must take a Boaters Safety Course to operate a personal watercraft. Anyone convicted of violating a Water Safety Act you will need to take a Boaters Safety course. The one-day course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 19, at Southern Cherokee Federal Credit Union in Rusk. Cherokee County Farm Bureau will provide lunch. Registration is $28 per person. Those interested in registering for the course will need their Social Security cards and a picture ID. Student ID will work for anyone under 16 years of age. Caddoan Mounds park museum trail and tour
You are invited to a formal museum and trail tour from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 19, at the Caddoan Mounds State Historic site. This will be an open question/discussion event regarding Caddo Indian culture from 750 to 1400 A.D. The site is located six miles west of Alto on U.S. Hwy. 21 W. Call 936-858-3218 for details.
JHS Project Graduation plant sale
Jacksonville High School’s 2008 Project Graduation will hold plant sale April 19 at the Capital One parking lot on the corner of U.S. Highways 69 and 79. Plants featured in the sale include pots, flats and hanging baskets of flowering plants like geraniums, zinnias, hibiscus, petunias, verbena, impatiens, gerbera daisies, potato plant, red swedish ivy, purple jew, cannas, pentas and lantana. Prices range from $4 to $10.
Master Gardner Plant sale
The Cherokee County Master Gardener Association will host its annual Spring Plant Sale Saturday, April 19, 2008, starting at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Stripling Clinic, 555 S. Jackson Street, Jacksonville. Come early for the best opportunity to purchase favorite home grown plants from the Master Gardeners’ own gardens. Plants available will range from coreopsis to clematis, daylilies to Iris, butterfly garden plants, as well as a variety of trees. Master Gardeners will be available to answer your gardening questions. The Texas Master Gardener program is an educational activity offered by the Cherokee County AgriLife Extension. It is designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and extend horticultural projects throughout the community. Cherokee Charmers’ Chicken Thang
The Jacksonville High School Cherokee Charmers are holding their annual “Chicken Thang” fundraiser on Saturday, April 19, from 10:30 to 3 p.m. in the Capital One parking lot. The cost is $10 for a whole-chicken plate, $9 for a large brisket plate, and $7 for half-chicken plate. Drinks will also be available for purchase. Call 903-721-2972 for more information.

Chili cookoff
Crisis Center of Anderson and Cherokee Counties Rubber Duckie Chili cookoff is scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the Lake Jacksonville Concession area. Proceeds from this event directly benefit abused women and children. The chili cook-off will be affiliated with CASI-Chili Appreciation Society International. It’s mission is to “Cook Chili for Charity.” Events scheduled in cook-off are: CASI Chili competition, CASI Showmanship and People’s Choice Award. The Chili cook-off will open at 11 a.m. at the concession area. The price of chili tasting is $3 and includes a tasting cup, spoon and ballots for the much coveted People’s Choice Award. The entry fee for chili cooking is $20. Turn-in time is 1 p.m. for CASI Chili and Showmanship will run from 11 a.m. through 12 p.m. People’s Choice judging by the public for chili will end at 2 p.m.. Adopt-a-duck
Adopt a racing rubber duck for the Anderson and Cherokee Counties Crisis Center’s Great East Texas Duck Race. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. Instant winners will be called for ducks “plucked from the flock” during the race. A “dead duck” prize will be awarded for the duck in last place. Adopt a duck for $5 each. Adopt a family of five ducks for $22.50 or a whole flock of a dozen for $50. Annual Confederate memorial service
The annual Confederate Memorial Service will be held to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at West Shady Grove Cemetery near Pierce's Chapel. The event will be jointly sponsored by Moses M. Buckner Chapter 2442, Invincible Rose Chapter 37, and New Salem Invincibles Camp 2107 SCV. Ten Confederate Veterans buried in the cemetery have been identified and will be memorialized at that time. Relatives of all ten veterans will speak on behalf of their ancestor.
Green Acres Singers and Orchestra to perform at Central Baptist
The Green Acres Singers and Orchestra will be presenting a concert of praise and worship on Sunday evening April 20 at 6 p.m. in the Central Baptist Church Worship Center. This concert under the direction of director Matt Robb is free and anyone is welcome to attend. The Green Acres orchestra features over 30 talented musicians from the East Texas area. In June, the orchestra will be featured at the Lincoln Center in New York City.

Texas Aggie Muster
Former students of Texas A&M University will assemble in Cherokee County on April 21 for the annual Texas Aggie Muster to honor all Texas Aggies who have passed away within the last year. Muster activities, including a meal followed by the Muster program, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee County Electric Co-op on U.S. Highway 69, between Jacksonville and Rusk. All former and current students, their families, and friends of Texas A&M University are invited to attend. 2008 Relay for Life event
The Cherokee County Relay For Life is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26 at Mauldin Field on the campus of Jacksonville High School. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on the evening of the 25th and end at 7 a.m. on the morning of the 26th. 4th annual Mr. and Miss Gopher Fest pagent
The 4th annual Mr. and Miss Gopher Fest pagent is accepting contestants. Female age groups include ages infant to 18 years and older. Male age groups include ages infant to 16 years and older. Gallatin Gopher Fest Chili Cook-off
Registration for the 4th annual Gallatin Gopher Fest Chili Cook-off is going on now. Entry fee is $25 for the non-sanctioned event. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place teams. Pottery show opens in Lufkin
The Museum of East Texas in Lufkin will present “Pots and Process: The Works of David Hendley with Documentary Photographs by R.P. Washburne” March 1 through May 31. Healing room offered
River of Life Christian Church in Rusk has recently opened a Healing Room in which they offer prayer free of charge to anyone in need of healing. Literacy Council English classes

The Sam Terry cancer fund has been established in Terry’s honor at Austin Bank. The money collected will be used to fund the medication and the transportation costs of cancer patients who need help getting to and from doctor appointments. Donations may be made at any branch of Austin Bank.

JC Spanish classes
Beginning Spanish Conversation II will be offered as a continuing education course at Jacksonville College from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, March 4 through April 8. The course is designed for individuals who want to continue to develop the communication skills they learned in Beginning Spanish Conversation I, or for those who already have an elementary background in Spanish. The textbook used in Spanish Conversation I will also be used for this course. The cost of the course is $75 for individuals who took the first course and already have the textbook, and $95 for everyone else. Students must register and pay for the course by 4:45 p.m. March 4. Health education luncheon
HOPE Partners in Health sponsored by H.O.P.E., Inc. is offering health education luncheons the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. The programs will provide information to encourage healthier lifestyles. Topics range from physical fitness, stress relief techniques, skin care, anger management, dental health, and other issues to improve personal health.
