BREAKING NEWS Craft-Turney Water Supply customers receive boil water notice

Craft-Turney Water Supply declares emergency after water main breaks

By Cristin Ross

Craft-Turney Water Supply issued a boil water notice to several of its customers Monday afternoon, after residents along the Maydelle Highway woke up waterless Monday morning.

The boil water notice specifically names Craft-Turney Water customers in the areas the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2138 and Farm-to-Market Road 347 South, along FM Road 2138 and on all County Roads up to and including CR 3107 and CR 3104.

Residents are urged to boil water before consuming it until further notice from the water supply corporation.

“We will notify customers when it’s safe again,” Craft-Turney Water Supply Office Manager Rhonda Briggs said Monday afternoon.

Water should be brought to a rolling boiling for two minutes and cooled prior to drinking, cooking and ice making, to ensure the destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the water supply company to issue the warning Monday after one of Craft-Turney Water Supply’s water mains along FM Road 2138 developed a substantial leak sometime Sunday night. Substantial enough for Briggs to declare a state of emergency as soon as she arrived at work Monday morning, she said.

“We always try to repair any leak as soon as possible,” Briggs said Monday morning. “We have to contact DigTest to find out where the other utilities are before we can start digging. That usually takes 48 hours.

“But in this case, it was bad enough, we declared an emergency and were able to start work within two hours (on Monday).”

Water was restored to most customers by early Monday afternoon.

Age and wear is thought to be the reason the line began leaking, Briggs said.

“We’re in the process of evaluating our system,” she said.

Water supply officials were unsure Monday exactly how many Craft-Turney water customers were affected. Initial estimates were throught to be up to 100.
