TROUP – The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man July 3 for allegedly assaulting another man with a shotgun. Rolen Ward Jr. was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident took place at approximately 10:30 p.m., the night of July 2, at the victim’s residence near Troup.

“The two gentlemen were at the victim’s residence when they became engaged in a verbal altercation. Mr. Ward went to his truck, retrieved his shotgun and began assaulting the victim with it,” said CCSD Deputy Chris White. “He proceeded to strike the victim about the upper torso and facial area with the shotgun.”

A relative of the victim witnessed the attack. Ward left the scene of the crime prior to the deputy’s arrival.

“The deputies went to the suspect’s house, which was nearby, and attempted to make contact with him. Through the window they could see him and it appeared that he had either passed out or had done something to harm himself,” White said. “He was unresponsive, so the deputies entered his home to check on his well-being. A note was found that led the deputies to believe he had intended to harm himself. He was admitted to the hospital that night for ingesting a harmful substance.”

The night of the attack, the victim refused medical treatment, but did check himself into a Tyler hospital the next day with several facial fractures.

Upon release from the hospital, Ward was transferred to the Cherokee County Jail. His bond was set at $50,000.
