Critter carnival Saturday

• Shelter spotlight, page 10

Special to the Review

In recognition of National Homeless Animal Day on August 18th, the Richard D. Klein Animal Shelter is hosting a County Critter Carnival for humans and their pet pals.

The mini-fair will be held on Saturday, August 18th, at the shelter at 208 East Tena Street in Jacksonville from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Shelter staff and volunteers extend a community-wide invitation to individuals, families and their furry friends to attend. All pets must be well-socialized, current on vaccinations and on a leash at all times.

Shelter Executive Director Angela Wallace states that this event represents an opportunity to educate the public about the homeless animal epidemic in Cherokee County.

“We continually look for ways to bring the community’s citizens and animals together in a venue where we can promote responsible pet ownership as well as educate the public on the overwhelming plight of homeless and unwanted animals in our own county. National Homeless Animal Day provides a perfect opportunity for an event such as this.”

The day’s events will include a variety of offerings for children, pets and adults alike, such as: face painting, a strut-your-mutt parade, miniature horse “petting booth” from Adventure 2 Horse Ranch, shelter tours and information booths. Contests will be held throughout the day, with prizes awarded for Best Trick, Best Dressed, Smoochy Poochy (best kisser), Most Unique Pet, the Wade-N-Wag (poochie pool), Doggie Deadringer (pet/person lookalike), and more.

In the ongoing effort to help reduce the homeless population, the shelter is offering two specials for the day: $10 microchip implants (to increase lost animal returns) and adoption discounts and incentives (to encourage re-homing).

To support the shelter and the cause for homeless animals in your community, plan now to attend. For more information please call, visit or click: 903-586-7336, 208 E. Tena, Jacksonville, or www.kleinshelter.org.
