A Jacksonville woman was arrested for robbery Thursday afternoon, in what police are calling a case of “shoplifting gone bad.”
Laurie Jolly was charged with robbery for allegedly trying to steal several items from the Family Dollar store and then attacking the store manager when she was confronted.
“At 5:26 p.m. Thursday, Officer Paul Allen was dispatched to Family Dollar. He arrived to find a woman attempting to leave the scene in a van, and he blocked her in,” said Detective Jason Price of the Jacksonville Police Department. “Officers made contact with the store manager and she advised that a lady had been seen going up and down the aisles putting items into a bag.”
According to the manager, upon noticing the theft she locked the front doors and called the police. She said the woman then attempted to get through the front doors and began to assault her when she tried to block her way.
“Jolly started hitting and scratching and kicking the manager as she was trying to get out through the front doors. She scratched the victim on the left arm and told her, ‘I have AIDS’ and then proceeded to attempt to bite her,” Price said. “Two customers who had left the store before the doors were locked, saw what was happening and helped the manager hold the doors shut.”
The actor then ran to the back of the store and exited through the emergency exit, police were told. When the manager followed her behind the store, Jolly threatened she had a knife, and knew how to use it, according to police reports. It was at this time that the suspect attempted to leave and was apprehended.
Price said Allen made contact with the store employees and the two Good Samaritans, and they all gave corroborating stories.
“While being processed, a black-handled knife and a crack pipe were found in Jolly’s possession. She was charged with robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia, and a criminal trespass warning was issued. It was a robbery because it was a theft with force,” he said.
The items found in Jolly’s bag were a bottle of hair dye, a bottle of shampoo, a bottle of conditioner, eight bottles of hand lotion and 11 car air-fresheners.
Bond was set at $15,000 and a citation was issued.
Aggravated assault
JPD also arrested a man Thursday in connection to an aggravated assault which allegedly occurred Monday morning in the 100 block of Dogwood Street. Officers responding to the scene made contact with a woman claiming her boyfriend, Jerry McCauley, had threatened her and her 8-year-old son with a kitchen knife.
“During the altercation, the victim picked up a snow globe and hit McCauley with it on the left side of the head, cutting his ear pretty severely,” Price said. “The victim’s father then entered from another room and separated the fight. The actor was still at the scene when officers arrived, and officers made contact with him, the adult female victim and the juvenile victim.”
The knife was located at the scene, and McCauley was taken to the hospital due to the trauma to his ear, according to Price.
“He was not arrested that night due to the severity of his injuries, which required hospitalization and transport to Tyler. A warrant was issued and he was subsequently arrested after being released,” he said.
McCauley, 39, of Jacksonville was charged with two counts of aggravated assault/family violence with a deadly weapon. An emergency protective order was filed against him.
Bond was set at $10,000 for each charge.
