The Cherokee County Commissioners Court voted to approve a grant submission to the East Texas Council of Governments on Monday.

Submitted by Precinct 3 Commissioner Katherine Pinotti, this application, if approved by ETCOG, will help pay to recycle solid waste.

“It’s specifically to collect tires out of Precinct 3,” Pinotti said.

A similar measure appeared at the previous meeting, but was voted down. Pinotti said she doesn’t expect to collect anywhere near the 2,000-tire limit reached.

No action was taken in an executive session concerning legal matters, but other items approved include:

• the amended list of election judges and alternates for the Nov. 3 election;

• purchases of used vehicles for Precinct 3;

• assistance for New Summerfield Independent School District in repairing the County Road 4721 bus turn around;

• replacement of a culvert on CR 4506 in New Summerfield, with New Summerfield to pay for all materials and the county to provide equipment and labor;

• acceptance of the Fiscal Year 2009 Homeland Security Grant Program award, requested by the city of Wells, for more than $46,000;

• authorization of a lease between Terry Mickler and Charles Crossman for Hangar 31 at the Cherokee County Airport; and

• appointment to establish a Local Data Advisory Board specified in Article 60.10 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.

Approval for Clint Goff, airport coordinator, to acquire a full or part time employee for the airport was tabled, pending more data.

“There’s nobody else right now who knows how to run that airport,” Goff said.

He also said he will need an extra worker during the weekends, and for occasions when he falls ill or takes a vacation.

Cherokee County Commissioners Court regularly meets at 10 a.m. the second and fourth Monday of the month in the county courtroom in the courthouse in Rusk.
