Court accepts police vehicles proposal

The Cherokee County Commissioners Court voted Monday morning during its regularly scheduled meeting to approve a bid for four new police package vehicles for the sheriff’s department.

Commissioners chose the lowest bidder of four — the only Dodge dealer on the list. Pearman Motor Co. of Alto was selected at $21,326 each vehicle.

Bill McRae Ford of Jacksonville was the next closest bidder at $21,329.

Other bids included Al Meyer Ford of Lufkin at $23,784.56 and Philpott Ford of Nederland at $22,260.

The county spent $85,304 on the four police vehicles.

Sheriff James Campbell presented the sheriff department’s monthly report — the department fielded more than 560 9-1-1 calls in October. The report was approved by the commissioners.

In addition, other items were approved by the commissioners were:

• a resolution for a Cherokee County Tactical Response Program grant for the sheriff’s department. Campbell said a name had been listed incorrectly on a previous version;

• a request from Kevin Pierce to buy back approximately four months of retirement time at a minimum cost to Pierce of $100. This amount could increase;

• Tax Assessor Linda Little to refund overpayment of taxes on various accounts. Among the reasons she cited for the refunds was a change in capital appraisal;

• county auditor’s monthly report for September;

• Precinct 2 constable’s monthly report; and

• Precinct 4 constable’s monthly report.

The court was adjourned following an executive session to discuss pending or threatened litigation and employee matters. No action was taken on this upon the court’s return to regular session.

Cherokee County Commissioners Court meets at 10 a.m. the second and fourth Monday of each month at the county courthouse in Rusk. The meetings are open to the public.
