The Jacksonville City Council will hold a public hearing today on the proposed budget and tax rate for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
The meeting is slated for 6 p.m. in the Norman Activity Center council chambers, 526 East Commerce Street, according to City Manager Mo Raissi.
The council's budget total is estimated around $14 million, although City Council members have continually cautioned that this number could be revised in either direction by the time the final vote is taken next week.
Jacksonville Mayor Kenneth Melvin has gone on record as saying he is very confident the council can hold the tax rate “as is” – at 62 cents per $100 valuation.
The mayor also noted the council has been wrestling in its budget deliberations with employee health insurance premiums that increased dramatically this year.
