A 2013 Relay for Life of Cherokee County kick-off party is planned for this evening. at the Cherokee County Electric, 29880 U.S. 69 North in Rusk.
“We're starting the new year off with the resolution to make a difference in the community, to make a difference in the lives of cancer survivors and caregivers,” said event coordinator Cindy Kline. “We're asking people to pledge (and) join in the fight by participating in the Relay for Life.”
This year's theme is a nod to the 100th anniversary of the American Cancer Society, “We Are Making Cancer History,” or a thing of the past, Kline said. “Teams can choose any period throughout history to represent their team name or campsites (using dates of) significant events, inventions or discoveries of mankind as well as including historical breakthroughs of cancer discoveries and advancements.”
Participants can register their team and pick up team packets during tonight's event, which will be held 5:45 to 7 p.m. People also can learn about other ways to support the effort. The Relay For Life of Cherokee County Texas is scheduled for April 26-27 at Mauldin Field at Jacksonville High School.
Additionally, local RFL coordinators also are seeking recipes from cancer survivors, caregivers and event participants to be used in a new cookbook, whose proceeds will be used to support Cherokee Relay for Life.
“In addition to great recipes, this cookbook will have unique cancer fact information, early detection and prevention information, side effect management suggestions and other information,” Kline said.
