Wardell announces retirement

JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville ISD superintendent Joe Wardell announced his retirement to faculty and staff Friday afternoon.

His resignation is effective at the end of March 2015, according to a release from the school.

Wardell said at that point he will have six years as superintendent under his belt at JISD and 40 years experience in education.

"I have had the privilege of serving as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal and superintendent in other school districts," Wardell said. "All of these were great experiences, but none have been as enjoyable and rewarding as my years here as Superintendent in Jacksonville."

Wardell said by announcing his retirement now, he hopes to allow the school board time to select the right person to succeed him.

"Jacksonville ISD has a tremendous heritage of academic success. Because of the quality of the employees and the support of this community, I believe it also has an unlimited future," Wardell said.

Wardell was hired after Stuart Bird retired. Wardell spent eight years as the superintendent of Anna ISD before coming to Jacksonville.
