Carter BloodCare will host blood drives July 19 and July 25 at sites in Jacksonville to help maintain the community blood supply, with donors eligible for gift certificates for free pints of Blue Bell ice cream.
“Summer is the most challenging season to maintain the community blood supply” because “donors are fewer in number and the need for blood by local hospitals is higher than usual,” according to a release from Carter BloodCare, which serves more than 200 health care facilities in a 58-county region of Texas.
The organization estimates that approximately every 90 seconds, one patient within its service area requires a blood transfusion, resulting in an amount totaling more than 440,000 units of blood components per year provided by Carter BloodCare.
The Friday, July 19 drive will be held in the parking lot of the Brookshire Brothers Store, 210 E. Cherokee, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Donors will receive a $10 Brookshire Brothers gift card for participating in the drive. For more information, contact Mark Carroll, 903-586-9333.

The organization also offers donor rewards and the chance to participate in drawings, including this month's give-away of pints of Blue Bell ice cream.
Donors as young as 16 years of age may volunteer, with parental consent; donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they donate.
“It's also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood,” the releas advises.

Rusk shot clinic
Cherokee County Public Health will host an immunization clinic for school children from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, July 23, at the Rusk Civic Center. Parents are asked to bring all prior vaccination records for each child or notification from school of what vaccines are needed.
Immunizations for eligible children are offered at a cost of $10 for one vaccine and $15 for two or more. Medicaid/CHIPS Superior and Amerigroup accepted.
Vaccines offered are: Dtap, Tdap, Inactivated Polio Vaccine, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis A, and Meningococcal.
School children must receive their vaccines prior to the start of school: If a student is not vaccinated entry into school may be delayed by school administration.
