CHEROKEE COUNTY — A Feb. 4 candidate forum hosted by the Cherokee County Republican Club hopes to give voters a clearer idea of political candidates and their platforms in upcoming primary elections.

“We've been doing this for years,” said Josie Schoolcraft, event steering committee member . “We want people to have an opportunity to see who they feel is the best person to represent the taxpayers of our county.”

The event, slated for 6 p.m. at the Jacksonville College chapel at 105 Albritton Drive, will feature Republicans who have filed for candidacy in offices of House District 11 State Representative, County Court-at-Law Judge, County Judge, County Treasurer, County Surveyor, County Commissioner Pct. 4 and Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace.

These forums are very much a service to the community, and often help give voters a clearer idea of what's going on.

For example, in 2012, when the state was redistricted, and House District 11 changed from Cherokee, Rusk, Panola and Houston counties to being comprised of Cherokee, Rusk and Nacogdoches counties, “the forum actually helped (voters) determine who to vote for,” Schoolcraft said. “I think that was our biggest turnout for a primary.

The forum is open to the public and will be moderated by Alexa Vogue of Tyler.
