JACKSONVILLE — A field of 173 crosses erected Monday at Jacksonville's Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church represents the number of abortions performed daily in Texas. It is part of a Cemetery of Innocents campaign done nationwide each January by Knights of Columbus councils as a reminder of the impact of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that established abortion as a legal right

of women.

Father Mark Kusmirek, OLOS pastor, called the right to life “our most basic need, and the church works along with her brothers and sisters of different faiths to promote that right, in particular for unborn children.”

The church's Rachel's Vineyard ministry is for men and women who have struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of an abortion, according to the www.rachelsvineyard.org.

The crosses will remain in place at the through the end of the month.
