Sonic slated for March reopening after fire damage

JACKSONVILLE — The wait for a foot-long chili-cheese coney, a creamy shake or maybe one of those famous Route 44 drinks should be coming to an end soon for patrons of Jacksonville's Sonic Drive-In, located at 1105 South Jackson St.

The building was damaged by an electrical fire that broke out in the late afternoon hours of  Jan. 18.

Since that time crews have not only been busy repairing and cleaning up the restaurant, but have also been making some upgrades and needed enhancements, according to Tim Thompson, who is the contractor responsible for the project.

“In addition to making repairs (associated with the fire), we've been doing some improvements and maintenance to the (restaurant) while it is out of service,” Thompson said.

One of those embellishments, that should benefit not only Sonic employees, but customers of the popular eatery as well, is a brand new state-of-the-art Point of Sale (POS) system that is being installed at this time, according to Thompson.

Thompson said all of the work has been going along smoothly, and he is shooting for a soft grand-re-opening on March 1.

“We hope to be done by March 1,” Thompson said. “But with the weather that could change, so I don't want to promise that everything will done by then, but that's kind of our target date.”
