TROUP — Now in its 20th year, the Four Winds Canterbury Faire has been delighting East Texans with a glimpse of the Renaissance life.

The 2014 schedule kicks off this weekend at the faire grounds – located at 21852 County Road 2178 in Troup – with Canterbury Tales, featuring food, entertainment, festivities and Renaissance dress.

This year's annual event is held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, March 1 through April 29, and will feature weekly jousting tournaments, according to Four Winds representative Debra Stanley.

“This year, on March 23 and March 24, we will be having a pirate invasion, with a pirate weapons demonstration, costume contest and masked ball,”

she said.

A Celtic weekend – slated April 5 and April 6 – will feature Highlands games with local military, police and fire departments participating, she said, adding that the competition is open to the public.

“The Irish school of Music and many other Celtic performers will be entertaining visitors and a ceildh with authentic Celtic fare and music and dancing” will be held opening night of that weekend, Stanley said.

Area school districts are invited to bring students to the faire grounds between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on March 28 and April 25, which have been designated as “school days,” in which students will see history come alive.

While cost is $15 adults and $5 for youths ages five to 12, a special discounted rate will be given to school groups, according to the www.fourwindsfaire.com website. Additionally, weekend passes are $25 each. Season pass is $90.

Four Winds Canterbury Faire also offers a modern campground, complete with electric RV hookups, separate men's and women's shower houses and restroom facilities with flush toilets, sinks and hot showers, according to the website. Tent camping also is available.
