A man sought by authorities in connection with a San Antonio murder charge was located in town Thursday, arrested and taken into custody, officials said.
A very sketchy press release issued by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department stated that members of the U.S. Marshal Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force executed “an active murder warrant” when they apprehended Jose Gutierrez in the 900 block of Churchill Street.
The release — issued under the letterhead of Cherokee County Sheriff James E. Campbell — stated that after Gutierrez was arrested, he was taken to the Cherokee County Jail and remained there in custody awaiting transfer to Bexar County.
That county is apparently where the suspect was sought in connection with the charge.
The news release did not list the specific age or date of birth of the suspect nor contain any details about the crime he is alleged to have committed.
As “Jose Gutierrez” is a fairly common name, a Jacksonville Daily Progress reporter had no immediate success locating background information about his alleged crime without a date of birth, specific age, or home address.
Also, the specific address of the arrest as listed in the release could not immediately be located and verified through the Cherokee County Central Appraisal District. Additionally, the name of the street on which Gutierrez was arrested was misspelled in the news release.
Participating in the execution of the warrant were officers from the U.S. Marshall Service, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the Tyler Police Department and the Jacksonville Police Department, according to the release.
