Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

JACKSONVILLE — The new ALC Newsletter, an endeavor by fourth-grade students at Jacksonville's East Side Elementary Applied Learning Community, was launched Friday as part of the community's effort to better communicate with their families. “We're so excited and proud of all you,” enthused Angie Stinson, ALC coordinator. “You guys are setting the standard.”

Fourth-graders spent the better part of their first six-week school period researching how to write and create a publication, then spent the last two weeks producing it, putting it to bed – publishing it – two days ahead of deadline, said their teacher Mandy Johnston. “It's because we collaborated,” one student said.

Others pointed out that while “it was very hard, it was worth it,” because “we learned a lot of new words” and “we got to learn new things.”

The overall experience, another student said, “was super-duper awesome.”

About 225 copies of the two-page newsletter will be distributed to parents of ALC students every six weeks, informing them of various things going on around the East Side campus, Stinson said.
