JACKSONVILLE — A domestic squabble turned dangerous early Tuesday when a boyfriend briefly went "crackers" and tossed a barrage of grocery store items at his girlfriend.

Ultimately, Tristan Bell, 23, struck his girlfriend over the head during the incident with a box of saltines, plus several larger items.

This assault, which took place at a residence in the Lincoln Park area, grew violent enough to warrant police intervention, Jacksonville Police Det. Sgt. Daniel Franklin said.

Bell was taken into custody about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"This was a family disturbance," Franklin said. "They got into an argument and he started throwing all kinds of items at her. He was eating something out of a bowl and he threw the bowl at her. Then he started throwing other food items at her and at some point hit her over the head with the crackers."

Bell was arrested for assault on a family member, a Class A misdemeanor, and taken to jail. He was transferred to Cherokee County custody later in the day Tuesday, where he remained on $1,500 bond, jail records show.

The confrontation grew especially dangerous when Bell started throwing larger items at his girlfriend, Franklin said.

"At one point he kicked a box that was on the floor at her and it really caused her some pain," Franklin said.

Bell is a regular presence at the jail, officials said.

"He is well-known by our officers here," Jacksonville Police Chief Reece Daniel said.

But … saltines? A bowl of food? What was this guy thinking?

"I can tell you that in my 35 years of being in law enforcement it is my first time to see someone use crackers as a weapon," the chief said.
