CHEROKEE COUNTY —
Authorities remained on the lookout Monday for a male driver who led Texas Department of Public Safety troopers on a spirited chase – both in car and on foot – Saturday evening.
The chase began about 7:30 p.m. Saturday along northbound FM 2064, toward Troup. A Texas DPS trooper attempted to pull over the driver of a black Lexus, who refused to stop and instead abruptly turned his vehicle around and headed in the opposite direction, reports show.
Ultimately, the driver headed to a heavily wooded area near the convergence of State Highway 135, County Road 4910, and FM 3052.
The driver and the two women in the car ditched the Lexus and ran into those woods, reports show.
Texas DPS authorities called out one of their helicopters to comb the wooded area for the suspects. About 9 p.m., after a thorough search, the two women had given themselves up. But the driver escaped. Initial reports had the chase ending up near Mixon.
It was unclear if the male driver escaped on foot or if he somehow recovered his vehicle.
“The latest I have is that the suspect has not been apprehended yet,” Trooper Jean Dark, Texas Department of Public Safety public information officer, said Monday afternoon.
It was believed Saturday that there might have been firearms and drugs involved, according to tentative police scanner reports.
A description of the driver was not immediately available Monday from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
