JACKSONVILLE — Although the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event is still months away, committee members have already started planning.

“We have a fabulous committee formed, but the 2014 (event) is in need of individuals who wish to help planning, organization, promotion, structure and implementation,” said Cherokee County Coordinator Cindy Kline.

A Relay for Life 2014 Committee meeting is planned 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Cherokee County Co-op, and interested volunteers are invited to join, she said.

“If a small amount of work is done by many, a lot can be accomplished by all," Kline said.

“The success of Relay For Life truly depends on those who are committed to participating in it. I have seen the passion the Cherokee County has for the fight against cancer and the desire of so many to be a part of this fabulous event – whether it is being a team captain, team member or serving on the committee.  We need those who care and who want to become involved to help us make this the best year ever (because) everyone is a hero in the fight against cancer.”

Cancer affects a number of lives, whether directly or indirectly.

“(We) will either have cancer or will love someone that does,” Kline said, adding that the disease “has now made me an orphan.

“I lost my mother to cancer only a few short years ago and now, just a few weeks ago, I have lost my dad.  We each have been touched – but we each can make a difference for those we have lost, for those we love now and for future generations,” she said.

Through events like RFL, funds are generated for the American Cancer Society, which is dedicated to finding a cure for the disease, as well as provide services to those affected by cancer.

“Relay For Life has become an amazing event in Cherokee County involving individuals of all ages and backgrounds.  Just as cancer knows no boundaries – neither does Relay,” Kline said.

The 2014 event will be held April 25 at Mauldin Field at Jacksonville High School.

Individuals can serve on the committee or coordinate a team, she pointed out.
