The spot at 602 S. Jackson St. formerly associated with CVS before its move awhile back should be occupied by a brand new Family Dollar Store in the very near future, officials confirmed this week.
Mike McGahey with Triple C Development Inc. of Centre, Ala. – the contractor listed in city records for the Family Dollar project – did not immediately return a telephone call for comment Wednesday afternoon.
But according to company records, he has been very successful doing similar work for Family Dollar stores in areas such as Kansas.
Much renovation activity is visible on the store property right now – including construction work and an unmistakeable, huge hole in the side wall, according to bystanders.
Not a lot of information about Family Dollar's plans for the new store was immediately available this week, but City Building Official Jody Watson said the move from Family Dollar's current digs at 701 South Jackson Street – right next to Rancho Grande's Mexican food restaurant – will definitely increase store visibility.
Not being next to another business will definitely make it much more visible to passing traffic, he said.
"Being a stand-alone store really increases presence because you're not nestled behind or near people," Watson said.
Watson said it is apparent a substantial remodeling of the property is taking place.
"Based on what they are doing now, I would think they're adding maybe 20 feet to the north side other building," he said. "They're also cutting inside and adding to the overall building. This will take at least a couple of months to finish.”
Watson said the move of the current Family Dollar store is an assumption – but definitely an educated guess – on his part.
It is stated on the company's website that there are currently more than 7,000 Family Dollar locations in 44 U.S. states. The site does have a list of new stores, but Jacksonville is not yet listed on it. That site address is http://www.familydollar.com.
"Family Dollar really is America’s neighborhood discount store," the website states. "From Maine to Florida, and as far west as Idaho and Arizona, from downtown urban locations to rural areas and small towns, Family Dollar stores provide customers with tremendous value on the same high quality national brands you’ll find in other stores, but at incredible savings."
It's been quite a while since CVS moved out of the former spot. According to the Jacksonville Daily Progress newspaper archive, construction on the new CVS property began in August 2010.
"That property has been vacant since CVS," Watson said. "It appears they want it to look like any other Family Dollar store anyone has been in, But that work they are doing will make it look really new."
Since CVS's move there have been several businesses that have flirted with moving in, although it is uncertain if those businesses were related to the same outfit.
"It's been probably eight months since anything else was done but there were several different phases – such as a car wash and some other stuff,” Watson said.
However, it appears the winner in this case is Family Dollar.
