Dispatchers enjoy recreation day Saturday

TYLER —  Jacksonville's hard-charging 911 dispatchers will enjoy a much-deserved day off today.

At least seven Jacksonville dispatchers will join as many as 150 counterparts from various other East Texas towns as part of a special day in their honor at Tyler's Fire Mountain Amusements, 14722 Texas 155, explained Marian Lindsey, the city's communications supervisor.

Theirs isn't easy work.  Jacksonville 911 dispatchers are among thousands upon thousands nationwide working a stressful job that constantly involves matters of life or death.

Dispatchers  often have to juggle lonely, multiple tasks to get the job done — their responsibilities truly being where the rubber hits the road.

Therefore, Jacksonville Police Chief Reece Daniel said, this Saturday of  relaxation is very well-deserved.

“It's usually quite a nice day for 911 people,” the chief said in a Friday email.

This annual East Texas Council of Governments “911 Appreciation Day” event is certainly timely, because Jacksonville reached its 21st anniversary of having 911 on April 10,  Lindsey said,

“It started here on April 10, 1992 and was big, front page news,” she said. “We have dispatcher appreciation week coming up this next week — April 14 through April 20 —  so we decided Saturday was a good day to have this event.”
