HEALTH: Coming next week: FitCounty Cherokee Success stories

Jacksonville Daily Progress

JACKSONVILLE — Next Wednesday brings a new feature to the Health page: FitCounty Success stories.

These profiles will chronicle area residents’ successes at becoming more healthy and leading a more active lifestyle.

FitCounty Cherokee is a county-wide initiative which acts as a "supportive social movement, not a prescriptive program," said Chris Taylor, executive director of Cherokee County Health, who spearheaded the project in Cherokee County.  "We're not going to say, 'You have to do 15 push-ups every day,' we're going to connect you to the people who will teach you how to do those things and live a healthier lifestyle."

Fit County Cherokee is modeled after Fit City Tyler, which as positively affected health and wellness in Smith County.

The mission statement of Fit County Cherokee is "empowering and encouraging healthy lifestyles, one person at a time."

A “success” story doesn’t have to be a tale of a 100-pound weight loss, although it can be. A “success” can be starting a yoga class, buying organic, taking a walk every morning.
