A national Christmas toy drive benefitting children in need kicked off this month, with collection boxes located throughout the city for donated new, unwrapped toys.
The Toys for Tots program was founded in 1947 in Los Angeles by Marine Corps reservist William Hendricks and has grown to an average distribution of 13 million toys annually given to an estimated 5.8 children in need.
The campaign runs through Dec. 19, with donation sites already established at the Jacksonville Daily Progress, Bill McRae Ford, WalMart and Bacon Chevrolet.
