Inspired by the People Helping People program initiated by a local business last Christmas, Jorge Aragón has coordinated a community appreciation day at his 807 S. Jackson Street office, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
“Super Gallo (Market) inspired me with their program – I've always wanted to do something like this, but didn't want to wait for a special celebration for the community (to gather),” the Farmers Insurance agent said, adding that he spoke with different business leaders about the community event “and it kind of grew from there.”
Aragón said he intentionally planned it as a weekend event to allow families to attend together.
“The kids are out of school, and it's something to do in Jacksonville – families are together (having fun). There are tons of stuff held throughout the week, but nothing really on weekends,” he said.
Saturday's free event will feature food, music and entertainment, as well as drawings for a 32-inch LED flat-screen TV, a portable DVD player and gift certificates donated by local restaurants.
Several organizations also will be on hand, including H.O.P.E., the Jacksonville Police Department, the Hispanic Center of Tyler, the local Literacy Council, Cherokee County Public Health and Living Alternatives.
“It started out as something small, but it's getting bigger,” he said. “Hopefully by next year, it'll be a lot larger.”
