In its fight against cancer, First United Methodist Church Jacksonville will host Pineywoods 10,000 “Run with a Purpose” Saturday at 1031 SE Loop 456 in south Jacksonville.
The event includes 5k and 10k runs/walks through wooded area around the church, said Diana Smith, the church youth director helping organize this year's event.
Also helping coordinate this year's run are Paul Travis and Greg Wade.
Smith said the length of the trail “depends on the route you take.
“Some people are more interested in a longer run, which goes from church through the Nichols Green area inside the loop, behind Mother Francis Hospital and through the Ruth Nichols Arboretum,” she said.
Last year's event attracted 70 participants and raised approximately $1,500 for Cherokee County Relay For Life, which is slated April 26 at Jacksonville High School's Mauldin Field.
“The church has a relay team that different businesses, churches and groups support, but before that event, we try to raise money for our team” through the Pineywoods 10,000, Smith said. “This is our big kick-off.”
Saturday's event begins with a 7:30 a.m. registration at the church, with races starting at 8 a.m.
Cost for the 5k event is $20 through end of day Thursday, then rises to $25; for the 10k event, cost is $25, rising to $30 on Friday.
