To raise awareness of the Cherokee County Relay for Life event later this month, organizers have declared Friday as “Paint the Town Purple” day.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to decorate with purple to show support in the fight against cancer, said local RFL chairman Cynthia Kline.

“The success of this event is solely based on community support and the awareness and compassion the community has in the fight against cancer,” she said. “Paint the Town Purple raises awareness throughout the community in a visual manner to allow people to know that the relay is coming up, and that it's never too late for people to get involved.”

Her goal is to see 50 teams registered for the Relay for Life, which kicks off at 7 p.m. April 26 at Jacksonville High School's Mauldin Field.

“Right now we have 42 teams signed up from throughout Cherokee County – we have teams from Alto, from Rusk and Jacksonville and points in between, and we'd love for individuals to help us meet that goal,” Kline said, adding that as time draws nearer to the event, “it's very exciting.

“We have a lot of different (fundraisers) that the teams are having – garage sales, a baked potato sale, bingo – over the next several weeks,” she said.

A purple ribbon campaign supporting this Friday's event are on sale for $5 each; also, a Luminaria and Flames of Faith fundraiser also has kicked off – these latter items will be lit up at 9:30 p.m. the night of the Relay, placed around the perimeter of the track, Kline said.

The Flames of Faith are personalized with names of those being honored, and cost $100, while the Luminarias are $5 each, she said.
