Coordinators preparing for candidate forum

CHEROKEE COUNTY — A candidate forum scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, by the Cherokee County Republican Club has attracted nine participants so far, said a member of the committee coordinating the event.

The forum will allow voters an opportunity to become more educated about each participant and their platforms.

“It's going to be a pretty good turnout,” said Jefferson Jackson, committee vice chairman, adding that candidates from the highly contested Cherokee County Court-at-Law primary will be present, as will candidates for the Dist. 11 State Representative's race.

The forum will be held at the Jacksonville College Chapel and also includes Republican candidates who have filed for positions of Cherokee County Judge, County Treasurer, County Surveyor, County Commissioner Pct. 4 and Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace.

“I believe that when we last had it at Jacksonville college two years ago, we had about 400 turn out,” Jackson said.

During the past week or so, committee members have fielded “quite a few” questions for candidates that were sent by email to be asked during the forum.

People are taking an interest, because “it seems like there's a lot of frustration with government now, which I think is the main reason they get more actively involved with local politics. There were some good questions that came in about each of the races, and from those, we hope to pick some (that will help voters) to distinguish between candidates,” he said.

“We're hoping that they become more educated on the differences between the candidates, to discern differences between them, so they can make a better educated choice when it comes to the primary election,” Jackson said. “They'll have access to these candidates, and see them first-hand (before then).”
