CHEROKEE COUNTY —
School board members in Troup and Rusk held respective meetings Monday evening to address agenda items.
In Troup, board members voted to approve a fee increase at the district's Child Care Center in hopes of creating a healthier operating budget.
District business manager Brett Parsons said the increase “will put the daycare's operating budget basically into the black – we're not trying to make money off of it, but just really trying to break even.”
Currently, 32 children are enrolled in the program, which is licensed through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. The program accepts newborn infants up to preschool age children who turn four by the beginning of September.
The district opened the center in 2005, and fees are used to pay the salaries of six employees currently working there.
Troup ISD helps subsidize a portion of these salaries, in turn ensuring local parents have a child care provider that offers education-based care, Parsons said.
“It's not like we're in Tyler where people have an alternative if the day care were to go away. There's not anyplace else in town to go – they would have to go (out of town) for day care,” he said.
At the beginning of March, rates went up $15 per week for infant care, and $10 per week for toddlers and preschool care.
“Our goal is to look at the operating report in April for month of March, and find that the March budget will be a balanced budget,” Parsons said.
Also during Monday's meeting, Troup school board members renewed approximately 80 contracts for teaching staff and counselors.
In Rusk, school board members accepted the resignation of Rusk High School math instructor Andrew Marchetti, who is moving from the district, according to school administrator Lesa Jones.
Marchetti has taught there about 10 years, said Jones, the RISD assistant district superintendent for finance and operation.
The board voted to hire Katherine Schmidt as Marchetti's successor. She will begin teaching March 17, when classes resume from a week-long spring break.
