Purchase complete on former church building

WELLS — Officials finalized paperwork on the purchase of the former "Church of Wells" building and two city lots, according to Dale Morton, Wells ISD superintendent.

The sale was completed Friday, Jan. 10, for $26,000, Morton said. The property had an appraised value of about $32,000 with the Cherokee County Appraisal District.

The property, located at the corner of 4th and Bonita streets in Wells, is adjacent to the school property. The building is planned for demolition.

"The purchase of this property will help us create additional parking and will expand the security perimeter around the school campus," Morton said.

Morton said he hopes to have the building demolished by February, however he is waiting for asbestos reviewers to schedule a visit and to receive proposals for demolition.

The buildings' most recent past included serving as the headquarters for the religious group, the Church of Wells. Attempts to contact elders with the church have gone unanswered. It is unknown where the group is located.
