JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville College has launched a new initiative designed to help students get ahead in course work over the winter break: The Winter Term program.
Registration runs through Dec. 13, with classes available to students seeking to complete graduation requirements or course prerequisites in a timely manner, said JC assistant registrar Amanda Glenney.
“This has actually been in the works this fall – a lot of schools in the area offer (similar programs), and it's a good way for students to get hours out of the way quickly as they work toward graduation,” she said. “It's a good opportunity that we saw, and a new direction for our college as it helps us become more well-rounded in our community.”
Students have an option when signing up for the $400, reduced rate classes: Sign up for online classes during Winter Term Session I, which runs from Dec. 13 through Jan. 10, or register for Session II, held Jan. 2-10 in an 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. classroom setting.
Classes include computer science, English, government, humanities, history, math, religion, science and sociology, among others.
“It's the first time we've ever done something like this, so we're really excited about this. We have a lot of students coming by, asking about the winter term classes and how it works toward their graduation plans. We've even had some parents come by also, asking about it, so we've had a positive response from the community,” both off and on campus, she said. “What we're doing is basically offering our students an extra term.”
The program isn't just limited to local students, but is available to those home on break from other colleges and universities.
“We're hoping to engage students home for winter break who are looking to pick up a few hours while their home,” Glenney said. “It could be that they want to take prerequisites for programs offered elsewhere.”
There is no cap on the number of students signing up, “we'll be taking as many students as we can,” she said, adding that “we're hoping this will help us to continue reaching out to more students.”
