Jean Derrick

JACKSONVILLE — A Mass of Christian celebration for Jean  Derrick, age 87, of Jacksonville, will be celebrated 10 a.m. Fri., April 26 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Jack-sonville with Father Mark Kus-merik officiating.

Burial will be held at Still Waters Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville.

The family will receive visitors on Thurs., April 25,  from 5 until 6 p.m., followed by recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. at Autry Funeral Home, 1025 Loop 456 in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Derrick graduated high school in Duhring, WV, and graduated at the top of her class from Charlotte Memorial Nursing School in Charlotte, NC in 1947.  

She spent her entire life in nursing and caring for others, working in Queens, New York, Blueford, West Virginia, Houston, and Jackson-ville.  

While in Houston she was at Hermann Mem-orial Hospital with Dr. Michael DeBakey. Jean met her future husband, Charles, while he was attending UT Dental School.  

They married in 1949 and eventually moved to Jacksonville.

While in Jack-sonville she worked at Nan Travis Hospital, Stewart’s Nursing Home, and was a school nurse for 20 years with JISD.

After retiring, many of her favorite memories were on the fairways of Cherokee Country Club with the Ladies Golf Association.  

She was a long time parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Hesse Gillespie; and husband of 62 years, Dr. Charles Derrick.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Derrick & husband Joe Lazo of Garland; brother, Robert Gillespie; and sister-in-law, Ramona Vecillo, both of Bloomfield, WV.

Pallbearers will be Randy Swanson, Bud Ridgley, Bryan Ridgley, Joe Peacock and David Fernandez.

Honorary pallbearer will be Walter Volz.
