Rowena Mae (Poland) Hughey

JACKSONVILLE — Rowena Mae (Poland) Hughey

1928-2014

Affectionately known as Scrappy, Rowena was born in Dallas, Texas, on August 17, 1928, to Edward Lee and Ellen Mae (Remling) Poland. She went to the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 20, 2014, at the age of 85, in Tyler, Texas.

Her family moved to Jacksonville in 1935, where she attended and graduated from Jacksonville High School.  Rowena married her childhood sweetheart, Rufus A. Ewing, Jr., in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1968. She later married W. R. Hughey, Jr., who preceded her in death in 1995.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Whitehouse, served Meals on Wheels for a number of years, and served as foreman of the Smith County Grand Jury in 1984.

There will be a celebration of her life on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Whitehouse, with the Rev. Matt Thomas, officiating. A private graveside service will follow.  Arrangements are with Stewart Family Funeral Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother Minnie Ann Poland, her sisters Fern June Poland and Marjorie Avera.

Rowena is survived by her daughters, Roxanne Wright and Kay Stanley and her husband Don, Granddaughter Lynn Casey and husband Paul; great grandson Blake Saenz and his wife Bailee; great granddaughter Laura Reese Casey; sister, Helen Hooper; step children, Cara Sue Berman and family, Bill Hughey and family and Frank Hughey and family; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the caring staff of Hospice of East Texas for their loving care during the final stages of Rowena’s life. Special thanks are given to caregivers, Marilyn, Dayna, and Clara as well as nurse Kathryn.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggests a donation to The Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701, or a charity of your choice.

Visitation will be held at the Church from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday.
