Mary Agnes “Aggie” Lane

JACKSONVILLE — JACKSONVILLE – Funeral services for Mary Agnes “Aggie” Lane, age 91, of Jacksonville are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville with Rev. Tom Stephenson officiating. Interment will follow at Earle’s Chapel Cemetery in Jacksonville. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Lane passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in Jacksonville.

Mary Agnes was born April 12, 1922 in Jacksonville. She graduated from Jacksonville High School and Lon Morris College. On August 22, 1942, she married Lewis J. Lane. Mary Agnes worked for Marja in Jacksonville for 10 years. She went back to school and attended Stephen F. Austin State College and received a BA in Science and a Masters in Education. Upon completion, she began teaching at East Side Elementary in Jacksonville. After 30 years of teaching the 2nd grade, she began teaching 1st grade at the Vineyard Christian School. She continued teaching there for 18 years until she retired at the age of 84. The new East Side Elementary Gymnasium was named after her.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. Mary Agnes was an avid walker and enjoyed taking Mission trips. She loved spending time at the lake with her grandchildren and driving her Mustang convertible but Mary Agnes was the happiest when teaching, working with the church, and singing in the church choir.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Lewis J. Lane; parents, James E. and Ethel Ward; and sister, Ruth Ward.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Hillencamp, Sandra Sherman and husband Bill, all of Jacksonville; son, Tommy Lane of Jacksonville; brothers, James E. Ward, Jr. of Tyler, Gene Ward and wife Judy of Dallas; son-in-law, Kim Hillencamp; five grandchildren, Stacy Gwartney and husband Brad, Stephanie Losey, Laney Crain and husband Scott, K.T. Hillencamp and wife Kelly, Stephen Sherman and wife Koco; nine great-grandchildren, Ashley and Austin Gwartney, Lance and Lauren Losey, Logan and Emma Sherman, Turner Crain, Hayden and Hadley Hillencamp; great-great granddaughter, Camille Grace Gwartney; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
