Joyce Mather

JACKSONVILLE — Age 98, went to her Lord and the Angels on Fri., July 5, 2013.  

Marjorie Joyce Mather was born to Lee M. and Lillian (Batey) Harding in Kalamazoo County, Mich.  Joyce was the third of four children.  Growing up on a farm, Joyce loved to ride the pigs and horses, go fishing with her Dad and do chores.  She attended Scotts High School.  

Joyce did her registered nurse’s training at Kalamazoo Bronson Memorial Hospital.  She and her sister Hope became nurses at Sheldon Memorial Hospital in Albion Michigan in 1935.  They loved to ice skate on the Kalamazoo River mill pond and attend at Albion College dances.

On Dec. 26, 1938 in Kalamazoo, Joyce married George Mather of Albion who preceded her in death in 1992.  Joyce was a member of Albion United Methodist Church.  She raised three children while nursing at Sheldon Memorial Hospital and later Albion Community Hospital, and later with the Calhoun County Health Department and Visiting Nurses Services, retiring in 1989.  Joyce golfed and bowled into her 80s.

Joyce lived in Albion Maple Grove Apartments for 20 years until a recent fall.  She loved her cat Suzy, reading, watching TV and visiting with other Maple Grove residents.

She is survived by her children Alan (Ruth) of Jacksonville, Texas, and Lyle (Ann) of Dewitt, Mich.; five grandchildren:  Haig Black of Battle Creek, Mich., Karen Palmer of Whitehouse and Tracy Black of Jacksonville,  Nathan Mather of Munich, Germany and Emily Fine of Ann Arbor; 12 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband George, daughter Linda and three siblings.  

A memorial service will be held Sat., July 13 at 11 a.m. at Maple Grove Apartments, Albion, Mich.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Albion United Methodist Church.
