Elsie Mae Delores Upshaw,79, of Jacksonville passed away Nov. 9.
Elsie was born in Blackjack on Oct. 30, 1933. As a young woman she met the love of her life, Bobby Randall Upshaw, and together they moved to Houston and had six children. Widowed at a young age, Elsie returned to Jacksonville.
To provide for her family, she developed a strong work ethic -- a trait she passed on to all her children. She also passed on her devotion to family and a stubborn independent streak. Elsie loved to sew on her old Singer and could make anything without the aid of a pattern. She also loved card games and taught several of her grandchildren how to play poker. She cooked the best chicken and dressin’ in Texas and always made biscuits from scratch.
In death she is reunited with her parents, two sisters, her brother and her husband. Elsie, also known as Nana, leaves behind her sons and daughters-in-law Bobby and Rita Upshaw of Tyler, Larry and Kay Upshaw of Hemphill, and Tommy and Gina Upshaw of Rusk; her daughters and sons-in-law Cathy and Ronnie Murdock, Betty and Ted O’Neil, and Patty Darnell all of Jacksonville; more than two dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews, especially Debra Wiggins. Visitation will be on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Autry Funeral Home Chapel and will be followed by a graveside interment at Meador Cemetery in Jacksonville. Her grandsons Jeff Cook, Ryan Upshaw, Andrew Upshaw, Randall Upshaw, Nathan Upshaw and nephew Rusty Robertson will serve as pallbearers.
