JACKSONVILLE — Funeral services for Gwen Davis Newburn, age 91, of Jacksonville are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2014 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with Dr. Hal Brunson and Bro. Barnwell Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Still Waters Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Newburn passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in Tyler.

Gwen was born December 4, 1922 in New Summerfield to J. R. and Eura Davis.

She was a nurse for Dr. Newburn Sr. and Dr. Hogan Stripling at Newburn Hospital in surgery and later became the dietician at the hospital and at Bonner Place Nursing Home.

Gwen loved basketball, was a supporter of Jacksonville College, and was a member of the Jacksonville College Jaguar Club.

She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 65 years and was a current member of the Laureate Iota Rho Chapter.

Gwen was an original member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Jacksonville.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 67 years, C.L. Newburn and son, Lum Newburn III.

Survivors include daughter, Jan Newburn Brazier of Jacksonville; daughter-in-law, Sharon Newburn of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Scott Brazier, Lum Newburn IV, and Sarah Newburn; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Lum Newburn IV, Scott Brazier, Dustin Becker, David Johnson, James Spivey, and Ronnie O’Dell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Darby, Laureate Iota Rho, and the Jacksonville College Athletic Department.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, February 27 with family receiving friends from 5-7p.m. at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.

As she reminisced about her long life she said, “I’ve had a truly wonderful life. C.L. and I would often say how much we had been blessed. The Lord gave us so much more than we deserved or ever expected, and we are so thankful.”
